Sri Lanka won 5 awards at the Asia Pacific Information Communication Technology Alliances (APICTA) Annual Competition and Awards 2008 at the awarding ceremony held in Jakarta, Indonesia on 15th November, bringing great honour to Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka stood the test of not only the highest calibre of the contestants placed before this prestigious international competition, but also proved the excellent judging and selection process as five out of the 11 nominees from Sri Lanka were placed at the APICTA in the same order of ranking as was awarded at the national event.
This speaks of the calibre of the national judging panels who officiated at the Young Computer Scientist and National Best Quality Software Awards conducted by the British Computer Society Sri Lanka Section (BCS).
This year at APICTA 138 products competed under 16 categories. Sri Lankan winners at the APICTA are:
Gold Award Secondary School Category: Ganindu Nanayakkara of Ananda College Colombo with his Project – “The Watch”
Gold Award Commercial Category – Financial Applications: Epic Lanka (Pvt) Ltd
It was the first time ever in APICTA a Gold award was won for a commercial category and by EPIC Lanka Private Ltd - a SLASI member and the winner of the Gold in the financial category and the overall Bronze Award at NBQSA 2008.
Merit Certificates (awarded to those scoring 95% of the Gold awardees Score)
* Tertiary category: 1. Group project by Gehan Panapitiya and his team from SLIIT comprising of Thilini Ranaweera, Supun Kodithuwakku, Nadeesha Pallewatta, Roshini Pathiraja.
* Primal Wijesekera of UCSC - Community Mobile Network (COMONet) - the first one in mobile communication that emphasizes the concept of community of mobile users. Commercial category – Media and Entertainment
* Microimage Mobile Media (Private) Limited – New generation comprehensive video play-out system.
Ganidu Nanayakkara won the Gold at the Young Computer Scientists Competition 2008 under secondary schools category. There were merit awards for
MicroImage Mobile Media (Pvt) Ltd is another SLASI member and winner of the Gold Award in the media and entertainment category and the Overall GOLD at the NBQSA 2008.
APICTA was formed by the Asia Pacific ICT Trade/Professional organizations to develop and promote ICT industry in the region by recognizing and rewarding ICT companies and individual who excel in delivery of ICT products and services. It comprises nations such as Australia, China from East to Pakistan from West through South & South East Asian countries.
BCS Sri Lanka Section as the professional association and the SLASI as the industry association jointly represent Sri Lanka at the APICTA since 2004. Sri Lanka being an active member of APICTA has contributed to develop Judging criteria and it’s code of operations.
